Educated as an industrial engineer (Georgia Tech, BS 1955,
MS 1960), Mr. Phillips first practiced as a consultant
to manufacturing firms, construction firms, and government
research agencies for
19 years.
He
specialized in the design and implementation of management
information systems, serving as vice president of an international
management consulting firm based in Atlanta. He also assisted
clients in strategic planning and management training
programs.
He co-authored a leading textbook on project management. |
Mr.
Phillips left the industrial management field in 1974 to work
with nonprofit organizations. He served as executive director
and chief fundraiser for a conservation organization for four
years.
He
later returned to Georgia Tech as associate vice president
for communications and development. In that capacity he helped
conduct Tech's first capital campaign. The five-year drive
reached $202 million, double the original goal.
In
1992 Phillips joined the staff of the LSU Foundation, where
he reorganized the University's development program and managed
its first capital campaign. The original goal of the six-year
LSU Campaign was $150 million in gifts and pledges; it concluded
in 2001 with $255 million.
In
2004 Phillips retired as president and CEO of the LSU Foundation.
During his 12 years of service the Foundation's assets grew
from $60 million to $350 million.
Phillips
is an active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals
(AFP), the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations
(LANO), the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL), Planned
Giving Council of Greater Baton Rouge and several civic and
cultural organizations.
